Bowling Green is the kind of place people choose on purpose. It's a small town of about 1,170 residents, incorporated in 1837, with a Main Street lined by churches, shade trees and houses built across two centuries. If you want to live here, you're usually deciding between a lot inside town, close to everything, or open land just beyond it where the yard keeps going.
Spartan Homes works on both sides of that choice. We design and build new custom homes that look at home on an older street or a country road, and we remodel existing houses with respect for what makes them special. Whether you're starting from a bare lot or an older farmhouse you want to bring up to date, you'll work with one team from first sketch to final walkthrough.

A new home in Bowling Green should feel like it belongs. On an in-town lot, that might mean a wide front porch, a simple roofline and a footprint that respects the neighbors. Out on open land, it might mean a farmhouse set back from the road with room for a shop, a garden or a few animals. You can start from a Don Gardner, Frank Betz or Lifestyle Series plan, adjust it, or design something fully custom.
Every home we build starts at the NGBS Green Silver level, and our Spartan Standard features, with mid-grade finishes, are included from day one. You get a turn-key home with no hidden fees, so you have a clear picture of the cost before work begins.
We've built green homes since 2009 and have been named an NGBS Green Partner of Excellence four years in a row.
Our team brings 45 years of combined experience to new builds and remodels alike, including older homes with surprises behind the walls.
Owner Eric Henry served as an Army Apache crew chief in Desert Storm, and he runs every job with the same discipline and attention to detail.
Our specifications are in writing and our homes are turn-key, so you can compare bids line by line.
Many of the houses near Main Street have stood for generations, and they have the high ceilings, solid trim and front porches to prove it. Many are also ready for roomier kitchens, tighter windows and updated wiring. We remodel older Bowling Green homes so they work for modern life while keeping the details that made you fall for them.

Many older kitchens in town were designed as separate rooms, closed off from the rest of the house. We rework the layout, cabinets, lighting and electrical so the kitchen becomes the easy gathering place it should be.

From a dated hall bath in a mid-century ranch to a new primary suite in a classic two-story, we build bathrooms with good ventilation and durable finishes. The result fits the style of the house instead of fighting it.

In-town lots can be tight, so a second story or a well-placed rear addition often makes the most sense, while homes on open land have more room to spread out. Either way, we match rooflines and materials so the new space looks like it was always there.
Learn more →Bowling Green's historic core along Main Street is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. That history is a big part of the town's appeal. It also means many houses here are older homes with real character, and some are ready for thoughtful updates.
The town is easy to reach. US-301 and Route 2 run through the area, and Route 207 heads west to Carmel Church and Interstate 95, which connects you to Fredericksburg and Richmond. Fort A.P. Hill sits nearby, so many military families and civilian staff call the area home.
Your first big decision is in town or out of town. Lots inside town limits may be able to connect to the Town of Bowling Green's water and sewer service. Land outside town usually relies on a private well and septic system, so a perc test belongs on your checklist before you buy. We'll walk you through what to look for before you commit to a lot.

Tell us about your lot, your land search or the older house you want to update, and what you want daily life there to look like.
Pick a proven plan, change one to fit, or design from scratch, with a written specification so you know exactly what's included.
We help you confirm town utilities or a well and septic setup before anything else, so you know what to expect from the start.
We build to NGBS Green standards, keep you updated along the way, and hand over a turn-key home when it's done.
My husband and I could not be happier with results. Everything is just as we wanted. Having decided to improve our home’s energy efficiency, we picked Spartan Homes as the contractor.

Spartan Homes built us a wonderful home in 2005... This past summer, they added a gorgeous deck to the back of our home. We can’t say enough good things about the home they built for us...

It depends on how you want to live. A town lot puts you close to Main Street and may offer town utilities, while open land gives you more space and privacy. We're happy to look at both with you before you decide.
